Dunn - Dare To Be Different

2/19/2018

Comments

For Christmas, I get a subscription to Deseret Book Bookshelf Plus.  I have spent the past month listening to fireside talks.  I thought it would be great to take notes and share some of the things that I have learned through my blog.

Troy Dunn speaks during a fireside chat about being different from everyone else in the world.  He begins by talking about how hard it is to be the popular kid in school and be a Latter-day Saint.  He says that it is so hard to make decisions based on our values and beliefs because those are not always what the popular kids do.

He shares a story about being in the locker room during halftime of a football game.  Troy had made the decision to not drink Coca-Cola and his coach was pressuring him to drink a Coke.  Troy had a friend who spoke up in his defense that drinking Coke was against his religion.  Troy was trying to be different and seemed to cause so many problems.  But the next week during the game, Troy noticed that during half time, there was a 7-Up on the table to drink instead.  Troy had stood up for his beliefs and was able to be different.

Troy tells the story about having a party at his home that he had planned for months.  During the beginning of the party, his Dad shared the house rules with everyone at the party.  But as his father concluded, he told all his friends that they start all activities in the Dunn home with prayer.  So at the start of his party, they started with prayer.  He thought his life was over.  But in the end, his parents turned out to be popular with his friends and everyone enjoyed the party.  Troy was sure his life was over when his Dad started the party with prayer but it worked out being different.

Finally, he talks about his friend "garbage digger" who use to pick half eaten lunches from the trash.  It was some time before Troy became aware that the reason he was digging in the trash was because his little brothers and sisters were not able to afford more than one meal a day and he was trying to bring food home to them.  When tragedy strikes "garbage digger's" family, Troy was influential in raising money and support to help his family.

Being popular and being a member of the church is not always compatible.  Troy encourages each of us to make decisions that are in line with our values even though they are not popular.  There are more important things in life than being popular and we need to focus on those things.
