Eyring - His Spirit to Be with You - April 2018

9/25/2018

President Eyring speaks on Easter morning about the need for all of us to have the companionship of the Holy Ghost.
  • My hope today is to increase your desire and your ability to receive the Holy Ghost. Remember, He is the third member of the Godhead. The Father and the Son are resurrected beings. The Holy Ghost is a person of spirit. It is your choice whether to receive Him and welcome Him into your heart and mind.

President Eyring talks about the empty tomb and Mary's reaction to seeing the Savior after his death.  He also speaks about the disciples on the road to Emmaus having their hearts burn but not recognizing the Savior while He was with them.  He notes that the feelings we have when the Holy Ghost touches our lives can be more powerful than any other spiritual experience we have.
  • More precious than a memory of events is the memory of the Holy Ghost touching our hearts and His continuing affirmation of truth. More precious than seeing with our eyes or remembering words spoken and read is recalling the feelings that accompanied the quiet voice of the Spirit. Rarely I have felt it exactly as the travelers on the road to Emmaus did—as a soft but unmistakable burning in the heart. More often it is a feeling of light and quiet assurance.

He speaks about receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost after baptism.  He notes that it is our choice to have the Spirit with us.
  • We have the priceless promise of the Holy Ghost as a companion, and we also have true directions on how to claim that gift. These words are said by the Lord’s authorized servant with his hands on our head: “Receive the Holy Ghost.” At that moment you and I have the assurance He will be sent. But our obligation is to choose to open our hearts to receive the ministration of the Spirit over a lifetime.

President Eyring talks about Joseph Smith being an example of how we can receive continual spiritual direction in our lives.
  • The Prophet Joseph set an example for us of how to receive continual spiritual direction and comfort through the Holy Ghost.
    • The first choice he made was to be humble before God.
    • The second was to pray with faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
    • The third was to obey exactly. Obedience may mean to move quickly. It may mean to prepare. Or it may mean to wait in patience for further inspiration.
    • And the fourth is to pray to know the needs and hearts of others and how to help them for the Lord. Joseph prayed for the Saints in distress when he was in prison. It has been my opportunity to observe the prophets of God as they pray, ask for inspiration, receive direction, and act on it.

President Eyring concludes his talk discussing the concept of ministering.  He says that the Spirit will help us as we try to help God's children along the path of life.
  • Inspiration will help us minister to others for the Lord.
  • Great ministers have qualified for the Holy Ghost as a nearly constant companion. And they have qualified for the gift of charity, which is the pure love of Christ.

President Eyring concludes with his testimony of the Godhead and how they want to be part of our lives.  But them being invited into our lives is our choice and we have to choose to have them in our lives.
  • I bear my personal witness that the Father is at this moment aware of you, your feelings, and the spiritual and temporal needs of everyone around you. I bear testimony that the Father and the Son are sending the Holy Ghost to all who have that gift, ask for that blessing, and seek to be worthy of it. Neither the Father, nor the Son, nor the Holy Ghost force Themselves into our lives. We are free to choose.

I appreciated a deeper review of ministering in this talk.  It is interesting that President Nelson will not announce the ministering changes until the next conference session but already, the concept is being discussed in multiple talks before the announcement.  From this talk, I realize I need the companionship of the Holy Ghost to enhance my ministering efforts.  Not only will the Holy Ghost help me minister to those in need, He will also help us understand how I can minister more effectively.  I am grateful that I can be trusted to be part of the Lord's team of ministers.  It is important to make sure we have all the support we can get in our ministering efforts and living our lives so we can have the Holy Ghost help us is vital to being effective ministers.

Eyring - Inspired Ministering - April 2018

President Eyring speaks about ministering efforts in the church and each of our responsibilities to serve as the Savior would serve.  Presidet Eyring discusses the recently announced changes to the Melchizedek Priesthood quorum structure.
  • President Nelson has announced an inspired step forward in the Lord’s organized plan for His Church. That plan includes a new structure for priesthood quorums in wards and stakes so that we may better fulfill our priesthood responsibilities. Those responsibilities all have to do with our priesthood care of our Father’s children.

He speaks about a recent sacrament meeting he was in where a young 14 year old young man spoke about his responsibilities as a newly ordained Teacher in the Aaronic Priesthood.  Several key points in the young man's talk are great to ponder.
  • If we are trying to keep the commandments, be kind to each other, be honest, be good friends, and enjoy being together, then we will be able to have the Spirit with us and know what Heavenly Father wants us to do. If we don’t, then we can’t fulfill our calling.
  • No matter where we are or what we are doing, we can be a good example of righteousness at all times and in all places.
  • When we know people in the ward well because of home teaching, it makes it easier to do the next duty of a teacher, and that’s greeting the members at church. Helping people feel welcome and included at church helps all the members of the ward feel loved and prepared to take the sacrament.
  • It isn’t important if people see us serving; what’s important is that the Lord knows we have served Him.

President Eyring went on to speak about an inspired Home Teacher who was eventually called on to help a family that was too busy over the years to meet with him in person.  Because he had written them a letter monthly they knew who he was and when the time came that they needed assistance, they felt comfortable reaching out to their Home Teacher for help.  We can all learn from this example of never giving up when someone says they don't want help.

President Eyring concludes with some wise council.
  • It seems to me that we receive the Holy Spirit best when we are focused on serving others. That is why we have the priesthood responsibility to serve for the Savior. When we are engaged in service to others, we think less about ourselves, and the Holy Ghost can more readily come to us and help us in our lifelong quest to have the gift of charity bestowed upon us.

Our ultimate goal is to become more and more like the Savior in our thoughts and actions.  The Savior would minister to those in need and those that we have been assigned to help.  As the ministering efforts begin to be initiated throughout the church, President Eyring provides some powerful examples of good people doing the right things because they think that is what the Savior would like them to do.  The world has ideas about "what would Jesus do?" and it is our responsibility to put into action what we think He would do.

Eyring - Fear Not to Do Good - October 2017

Comments

President Eyring begins by talking about the challenge that President Monson issued to the church in the last General Conference.  President Monson encouraged us to make the Book of Mormon a bigger part of our lives.  He says that when we do, we can have the spirit become a bigger part of our lives.
  • Those of us who took his inspired counsel to heart have heard the Spirit more distinctly. We have found a greater power to resist temptation and have felt greater faith in a resurrected Jesus Christ, in His gospel, and in His living Church.

He shares that when we make the Book of Mormon a bigger part of our lives, we will be encouraged to share it with others and the rescue those that are in need of spiritual enlightenment.
  • As we accept President Monson’s invitation to plant in our hearts a testimony of Jesus Christ, we gain the power, the desire, and the courage to go to the rescue of others without concern for our own needs.

President Eyring shares a number of examples of people going to help others as a result of their belief in the Book of Mormon.  He talks about helping after natural disasters in Florida, Texas, and around the work.  These tragedies often result in the churches Helping Hands teams being organized and serving in their communities.
  • Each time there is a tragic event anywhere in the world, Latter-day Saints donate and volunteer to the Church’s humanitarian efforts. An appeal is seldom needed. In fact, on some occasions, we have had to ask would-be volunteers to wait to travel to the recovery site until those directing the work are prepared to receive them.

The desire to help others and to lift them up is a result of making the Book of Mormon part of your life.   The effects of Book of Mormon reading drive us to look out of serve all of Heavenly Fathers children.
  • That desire to bless is the fruit of people gaining a testimony of Jesus Christ, His gospel, His restored Church, and His prophet. That is why the Lord’s people doubt not and fear not. That is why missionaries volunteer for service in every corner of the world. That is why parents pray with their children for others. That is why leaders challenge their youth to take President Monson’s request to immerse themselves in the Book of Mormon to heart. The fruit comes not by being urged by leaders but by the youth and members acting on faith. That faith, put into action, which requires selfless sacrifice, brings the change of heart that allows them to feel the love of God.

He speaks about the last days and that things will continue to be in commotion.  But he don't need to fear what will happen as our faith in found in the Savior and in His promises to us to never leave us alone.
  • We know that in the last days, the world will be in commotion. We know that in the midst of whatever trouble comes, the Lord will lead faithful Latter-day Saints to take the gospel of Jesus Christ to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. And we know that the Lord’s true disciples will be worthy and prepared to receive Him when He comes again. We need not fear.

President Eyring concludes with encouragement to keep the commandments.  He assures us that angels will be around us to help us and that sometimes, we are those angels for other people.  He shares that our responsibility is to keep the commandments and God will use us for His purposes in the world.
  • I testify that the Lord goes before your face whenever you are on His errand. Sometimes you will be the angel the Lord sends to bear others up. Sometimes you will be the one surrounded by angels who bear you up. But always you will have His Spirit to be in your heart, as you have been promised in every sacrament service. You have only to keep His commandments.

President Eyring reminds us that serving God is a result of us gaining a testimony of the Savior and His gospel.  When we have the truth, we naturally want to share it with others.  How grateful I am to be part of a church that encourages its members to follow the example of the Savior and to reach out to those in need.  It is wonderful to help those that need a little light in their lives.  Serving others is what the Savior would do if He were here.  It is our responsibility to stand in for the Savior and help those that need His help the most.
