- The ultimate operation is not a physical but a spiritual “mighty change” of heart.
He relates a story about him becoming casual in his prayers and scripture study earlier in his life. He said:
- I had always loved going to church. I wondered why on this day the fire of testimony and the zeal that I had previously felt were missing.
I have found myself in that same exact scenario before in my life. I have become casual with my prayers, my scripture study, my allocation of time to my family, and my attendance at church. As I have personally reevaluated my spiritual condition, I have always found that adding those tasks back into my life has allowed the spirit to have a stronger presence in my life. I don't think it was ever the spirit that decreased, but it was my acceptance of the spirit in my life that caused the decreased influence.
Elder Renlund gives us some great counsel if we ever find ourselves in a scenario where we have become casual with our spiritual lives.
- To endure to the end, we need to be eager to please God and worship Him with fervor and passion. This means that we maintain faith in Jesus Christ by praying, studying the scriptures, partaking of the sacrament each week, and having the Holy Ghost as our constant companion. We need to actively help and serve others and share the gospel with them. We need to be perfectly upright and honest in all things, never compromising our covenants with God or our commitments to men, regardless of circumstances. In our homes we need to talk of, rejoice in, and preach of Christ so that our children—and we ourselves—will desire to apply the Atonement in our lives. We must identify temptations that easily beset us and put them out of reach—way out of reach. Finally, we need to frequently biopsy our mightily changed hearts and reverse any signs of early rejection.
Elder Renlund's counsel reminds me that I need to nurture and take care of my spiritual life as well as my physical life. Personal evaluation will allow me to identify those areas of casualness in my life and make sure that I address those issues quickly before they cause increased damage.
